Swimming
Our pools are staffed with Red Cross certified instructors. Their primary job
is to teach the basic water safety rules and skills in order to make each child
as safe as possible in, on, or around any body of water. Each child is
encouraged to progress at his or her own comfortable rate in the Red Cross program.
Boating
Boating is a new and unique
experience to many of the children who attend our camp. All children are
required to wear life jackets at all times. Basic instruction in rowing
and canoeing start at first grade level. This is one of our areas where
safety skills and techniques are first and foremost.

Adventure
Adventure is one of our most
popular and challenging areas. This activity has been planned to encourage
campers to try something new and different--some areas which may initially
create anxiety. It is our belief that as a child matures, he or she needs
to learn to be familiar with the anxiety that precedes any new venture,
cope with uncertainty and dare to enter fully into new situations.

Archery
Safety, care and proper use
of equipment are first in our archery area. Basic skills in target
practice and field archery are taught by qualified instructors. The
camper's skills are developed under close guidance and at his or her own
pace.

Sports
The focus at Franklin
Country Day Camp is on the 'new games' concept. Group, rather than
individual competition, invites all children to participate, enjoy and
benefit.

Arts & Crafts
Learning by doing is one
of the basic philosophies of our arts & crafts program. Each activity
inherently teaches children basic skills of eye-hand coordination, direction
following, use of tools, and use of different media. Emphasis is placed on
the fact that each child's work is unique and good. Thus, their natural
creativity is fostered, leaving each camper with a feeling of success at
having completed a project that is their own creation.

Woodworking
Safety, along with proper
use and care of equipment comes first in our woodworking shop. Campers
use hand tools only. Children are aided in designing projects for themselves
and combine their own creativity with tool skills acquired. At times,
projects for the camp itself are designed by the campers.

Ceramics
The basic 'earth' art form
is used by the counselor to develop both manual skills and artistic
creativity. Glazed clay products made by campers, range from rudimentary
forms to sophisticated sculptures. All ceramic creations result in deep
personal satisfaction to their makers.

Nature
Our nature program is
designed to provide a child with a rich emotional out-of-doors experience.
The basic theme is that man, himself, is a part of the wild natural
environment, and his decisiions concerning the out-of-doors must be made
with the utmost care and wisdom. We are not concerned with teaching
children the fifty most common trees of North America, but rather we
attemp to stimulate their curiositied and inherent desire to explore
the natural world. Our counselors teach respect for everything that
grows, creeps, swims of flies. It is through learning this respect that
we hope to create a generation highly conscious of their responsibility
for the preservation of nature.

Theater Arts
From elaborate productions
to simple stunts and skits, this area allows children to become anyone
or anything they wish, from monsters, or a New York Rockette, to Ghandi.

Creative Music
A jug band, playing the
kazoo, arranging Wagner or Beethoven to enhance movies produced, acted
and written by campers, skits, song writing, musical charades and
pantomime are just a few of the extremely creative ideas that have
emanated from our musical area. The enthusiastic participation in
our camp 'sing time' after lunch is sometimes overwhelming.

Video
Our own FCDC weekly
news program is written, directed and video taped by our campers.
Each group participates at its own level, with activities ranging
from 'disco dancing' to more elaborate productions. Every child
is a 'star' in this area.

Pioneering
Orienteering, outdoor
cooking, wilderness survival, trail blazing, cosmetically produced
realistic first aid, and monkey bridges are just a few of our
pioneering activities. Most importantly, a camper learns along with
the 'skills of the woods' self-worth and the way to independence.
The program is kept flexible enough to incorporate the original
ideas of our campers.
